Hello Friends! How are you? Today was the day the jet lag finally caught up with me. I put my head down to rest for a few minutes and woke up 6 hours later. Hah! Now I’m curious to see what time I’ll fall asleep this evening. : )
Do you have any fun plan for the weekend? I’m in the mood for a really practical few days of laundry, ironing and errands. Seriously, those tasks sound so good! Maybe for some extra fun we’ll take a spin in our happy little car. In the meantime, here a few things I’ve been wanting to share with you:
- I’m flat out in love with this series, Portraits of Swedish Workmen.
- He said he was leaving. She ignored him. Thought provoking article. (thanks, Erin)
- A play kitchen you can make yourself!
- Clever idea for displaying a quote.
- Long live funeral potatoes.
- Speaking of Mormon stuff, I was just featured in BYU magazine.
- Simultaneous Invention, Derivative Work, and Plagiarism — a good discussion.
I also write for Babble. Here are this week’s posts:
- Amazon says these are the Top Picture Books of 2011.
- Make this rad outdoor playhouse. No tools needed!
- This shop only carries (hip!) upcycled items.
- I’m excited about this announcement from Target.
- A new book from the Queen of Sweets.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend. I’ll meet you back here on Monday. I miss you already!
kisses,
Gabrielle
P.S. — You know what I miss? My blogroll. I think I’ll bring it back. I’m thinking a short-ish list that I rotate and update. What do you think? Do you like blogrolls? Do you favor any particular rotation methods?

Congrats on being featured in BYU Magazine! Lovely article for a lovely blog.
Blog rolls are great! That is where I have found some of my favorite blogs…including yours.
Enjoy life’s little changes,
Lori C.
Never heard of Privet House before but I clicked on the link and their wares look positively WOW-tastic!
These old men pictures are FABULOUS! (and I think blog rolls are great too – they add to our sense of community and I enjoy seeing what other people are reading.)
I kove blogrolls very useful and inspiring, you can surf from a blog to another to another to fjnd new treasures!! Please do it again, monthly rotation?
I think I saw that article on Jordan’s blog once! It blows my mind; not sure if I could do it, but I applaud that woman.
So glad I came here this morning. Those portraits! The article! and your lovely write up in the BYU magazine. All so nice. Thank you.
Not only is “A Few Things” the post I look forward to the most, but I really enjoyed that article about DesignMom in the BYU mag. I had no idea your site was so…young? I guess I must have found you in the beginning because it feels like I have been a fan for years. You just come across so polished and beautifully designed and dangit POSITIVE! Thank you. Thank you thank you thank you
loved this week’s “few things” thanks for sharing everything.
I haven’t even made it past the “thought provoking article” and I had to comment. This made me so happy. I’m sure it wouldn’t work for everyone and some people have really valid reasons for divorce. But I love that she loved her husband enough and was patient enough with him that they got through what could have SO easily just been “the end” of their relationship. I think that is absolute bravery and the kind of strength more people in marriages should aspire to.
She ignored him… I think we all need a little space for introspection occasionally (and her silently granting him six months to hopefully “figure it out” was infinitely generous). How brave ~
Blogrolls ~ Love them. Of the short-ish variety, even better!
I just love these photos. And congrats on BYU Magazine!
Oh, that Target announcement: like they don’t already get enough of my money. It fills me with both excitement and dread….!
I’d love for you to bring your blog roll back! I like your posts & the bloggers you do feature in your entries always seem to be up my alley. I’d love to see what other blogs you deem worthy of a visit! As for rotation, maybe every other week or so?
I prefer blog rolls that have their own dedicated page where they are all displayed by category.
Do you plan to only include blogs that you actively read? I often wonder this when I read other blog rolls, like did they add this blog because they read it and really like it or they added it just to be nice as a favor to someone…
I LOVE curated blogrolls. Like Jill, I like blogrolls to be on a separate page, hopefully separated by category. This reminds me, I need to work on my own. It hasn’t been updated in at least a year, and there are additions (and subtractions) that need to happen.
p.s. That article! Thought provoking, indeed!
I am working on adding a blog roll, too, so I appreciate reading these comments.
Love it that you just come out and ask people for their opinions on things :)
Just wanted to send cheers on your latest coverage!
These are really neat and all other links, as well. I don’t know why, but I get a little extra excited when you mention Sweden! Wclcome back and welcome on with the month! My first month, of my first blog, over and I thank you for kind words in Stockholm, last Spring! It’s fun… feels like the start of something very interesting… (I even thought of you when I showed “How to Keep Warm, Swedish-style” this month — of course, Polarn & Pyret! Have a wonderful weekend and month!
Yes, an I’m sure your blogroll is where I found Jordan. You curate so interestingly – I’d be curious to know who you read.G
I love the Play Kitchen!
Funeral potatoes! My best friend from junior high lives in Idaho and she introduced me to this dish. When she offhandedly mentioned we’d be having “funeral potatoes with dinner,” I said WHAT?! So she explained the role this dish plays in her community, we had a good laugh, and we dug in. I still giggle every time I hear the name.
I vote YES for the blog roll! Whenever I’m in need of a little extra inspiration, I’ll go to a blog I like and check out a few blogs listed on their blogroll. Because if I’m inspired by your blog, chances are good that I’ll be inspired by the blogs that inspire you. But as Jill Browning already mentioned, it always annoys me when people add blogs to their blogroll as a favor. It seems like a blogroll should be a list of blogs that YOU actually read and enjoy, not a comprehensive directory of potentially inspirational blogs.
Hope you’re having a productive, domestic weekend there in France. :)
I’d love to see the blogroll come back! Blogrolls are how I find new blogs and am reminded of ones I love that I’ve not been keeping up with. I’m sure I’d find some amazing blogs through yours. :)
Love that article ab Laura Munson. I read it a couple years ago, and it stuck with me ever since!
The Swedish worker portraits reminded me of a series of photos I saw years ago in Paris by Philippe Vermès. He was offered opportunity to display some work at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie when it was just going up, and what he did were these amazing portraits of the workers who were renovating the building and creating the galleries. He wanted the prints to be hung outside on the surface of the building instead of inside in galleries. I was out of the country and out of touch when the MEP was finished, so I don’t know if the show went up that way, but there’s a nice coffee table book of it and you can see some of the photos on his website: http://www.vermes.org/gallery/ouv.html When you are in Paris, you may want to check out Philippe and his family’s studio and living spaces for your blog. crazy amazing beautiful salvaged stuff.
Yes, please! I love blogrolls!
I love your Friday links and would love to see the blogroll return! Your links this week made me wonder a great deal about your religion. Although I’m not religious myself, I always am curious whenever you mention some tidbit about being Mormon. My knowledge seems to be limited to random secret references to ‘special underwear’ and ‘funeral potatoes’ and bomb-shelter storage of wheat. While understandably outside of the scope of your blog, I’d be fascinated in learning more about your own experiences with being Mormon and what that means for your family.
Gabrielle, thank you so much for mentioning my essay (which is also a book– This Is Not The Story You Think It Is). I have found that we can still have emotional freedom even when society tells us we are emotional victims. Happiness really is a choice. I appreciate your blog and am honored that my work found its way to your wonderful platform. yrs. Laura

That article, the marriage/divorce one was amazing. I read it last night and then read it again today. What a strong woman.
Definitely bring back the blogroll! I’m always looking for fresh ideas/blogs to check out.
Can’t wait to check out all your links!!!
I really like my “Good Reads” widget – it will display a link to the most current post for each of the blogs on your blogroll – I used it to make “my rounds” (Design Mom is on mine of course)!
I like blogrolls… I like clicking from site to site and finding something new! Also, I like my blogrolls, which rotate as new things are posted – but those are there to keep links handy for me, and to show my support for friends and bloggers I think are cool (like you).
Design Mom –
Thank you so much for posting a link to my quote wall art. Such an honor to be amongst your weekly highlight links.
The “thought provoking article” happened to my marriage. I’m glad I had the strength to get through something I never thought I could withstand in a million years. She handled it with more grace than I, but through it all, we came out intact. We are better for going through the ruin, and we rebuilt stronger, with fortifications.
I adore blog rolls! I find so much inspiration from skimming people’s blog rolls and have found many many favorites that way. Plus, I’m nosy! So I like to see what other folks are reading…:)
I love blogrolls! When I’m looking for inspiration, that’s where I usually look. I would be delighted if you resurrected yours. And by the way, your hair looks terrific!
